What can a viewer expect?

This a site dedicated to spreading the holiday spirit of mathematical ideas the whole year round! Catering to anyone who shares a fascination about the ideas of math, from the absolute value to the zeta-function(1).

Welcome to Merry Math

January 2012
AFOOT and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
wandering in a math blog, I hope to help you decode!

Ever rode a unicycle on a high wire? Ever made a visit to an unknown world in your mind?  Ever had a problem confront you that you needed to find a logical solution? Any of these situations, and a multitude more can be resolved with the application of mathematical thinking. And mathematical thinking is the crux of this blogger site. As a teacher and practicianer of problem solving, I hope to share ideas, comments, and "habits of mind" that relate to learning mathematics.

When we think about math, we usually begin with the concept of numbers. But numerical quantities are simply one domain of mathematics.

The mathematical tree also contains the branches of geometry, measurement, patterns and algebra, data analysis, probability and statistics. A great display of the many domains that math includes comes from the Mathematical Atlas.

But many consider learning math to be more analogous to falling
off a cliff than climbing the tree of knowledge.
